Whitepaper on Crude Blending Reasons for Blending Crude Oils at a Refinery

چکیده
Reasons for Blending Crude Oils at a Refinery Oil refineries, and especially their on-process units that process the primary crude feed stocks, are not uniform in either design or operation. The refinery process units and the combination of units built and in service at a given refinery location are part of a plan to accommodate a certain slate of crudes based on their properties. These decisions are also balanced against the availability and cost of crudes to determine an operating profit point. The more consistent the supply of crude oil to a specific refinery, the more that refinery can tailor its operation to that specific crude supply. However, economics makes that level of optimization difficult to achieve or sustain. Necessity forces refiners to have to retain some flexibility in the refinery process to handle a wider range of crude types than that preferred. Crude blending works hand in hand with refinery process flexibility in crude types by enabling the ability to mix crudes that may not, as individual feeds, satisfy the operating range of the refinery, but as components of a mixed feed will meet the refinery operating requirements.

Procurement planning in oil refining industries considering blending operations
This paper addresses procurement planning in oil refining, which has until now only had limited attention in the literature. We introduce a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model and develop a novel two-stage solution approach, which aims at computational efficiency while addressing the problems due to discrepancies between a non-linear and a linearized formulation. The proposed mode...
متن کاملIntegrating CDU, FCC and product blending models into refinery planning
The accuracy of using linear models for crude distillation unit (CDU), fluidize-bed catalytic cracker (FCC) and product blending in refinery planning has been debated for decades. Inaccuracy caused by nonrigorous linear models may reduce the overall profitability or sacrifice product quality. On the other hand, using rigorous process models for refinery planning imposes unnecessary complication...
متن کاملEfficient short-term scheduling of refinery operations based on a continuous time formulation
The problem addressed in this work is to develop a comprehensive mathematical programming model for the efficient scheduling of oil-refinery operations. Our approach is first to decompose the overall problem spatially into three domains: the crude-oil unloading and blending, the production unit operations and the product blending and delivery. In particular, the first problem involves the crude...

متن کاملAsphaltene nanoparticle aggregation in mixtures of incompatible crude oils.
We study the structure and phase behavior of asphaltenes comprised of large polyaromatic molecules in blends of naturally occurring crude oils using small angle neutron scattering (SANS). When two compatible oils are blended together, the asphaltenes remain dispersed as colloidal nanoparticles; however, when two incompatible oils are blended together, these asphaltene nanoparticles can aggregat...
